How to Get a YouTube Thumbnail URL: Working Examples
A YouTube video link opens a video page. A thumbnail URL opens the image representing that video. To get the image link, paste the video URL into our YouTube thumbnail downloader and select Copy URL beside the result you want. You can also build a thumbnail URL from the video ID.
Method 1: Copy the Thumbnail URL With ThumbGrab
- Open the YouTube video and copy its URL from your browser or the Share menu.
- Paste it into the downloader. If needed, select Get Thumbnail.
- Choose the result you need and select Copy URL.
- Paste the copied address into a new browser tab to open the image.
Copy URL and Download have different purposes. Copy URL gives you the direct image address. Download saves a file through ThumbGrab’s download service. Copying the address of a Download button may give you the service link instead of the direct YouTube image link.
Method 2: Find the YouTube Video ID
Start with the video’s own link. Copy the ID, not the channel name, a playlist ID, or the entire address. The examples below show where the 11-character ID appears.

Extra share parameters are not part of the ID. For example, the ID in youtube.com/live/MTZwSjiDg30?si=nvvIW75pYN1c7jdY is still MTZwSjiDg30. Preserve the letters’ capitalization, numbers, underscores, and hyphens in the ID exactly.
Build the Thumbnail Image URL
Insert the ID and the thumbnail filename into this pattern:

Why Doesn’t My Thumbnail URL Work?
- A video page opens: you copied the video URL. Use Copy URL beside an image result or the image pattern above.
- A particular size returns an error or placeholder: check the ID, then try another available size. Follow the maxresdefault troubleshooting guide.
- The link fails only in one browser or network: compare it in another browser before concluding the image is unavailable.
- The image has borders or appears cropped: the address may be working correctly. Read why thumbnail black bars and display crops occur.
Getting an image URL does not transfer ownership of the image. Ask the creator before reusing their work publicly.
